Museums

Santiago de Compostela's cultural heritage includes a series of museums with important permanent exhibitions, as well as prestigious collections of internationally famous artists. We provide data about the eleven most outstanding ones.

The Museo da Catedral

The Sanctuary which preserves the " Apostle's Tomb ". It is a " Pilgrimage Memorial ", with a pleasant sequence of pieces in the Treasury.

Open : Open during the morning and afternoon all year round, except on public holidays when it is closed in the afternoon. On Christmas Day, New Year's Day, St. James' Day and August 15th, closed all day.

Museo do Pobo Galego

The former Convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval , situated on a hill outside the walls of the historical city, beside the road used by pilgrims to enter Compostela , now houses the Museo do Pobo Galego (Museum of the Galician People) , which, by means of a wide-ranging and varied collection of pieces, provides a general view of the most representative expressions of Galicia's own culture. Its permanent rooms display different aspects of costal life, traditional trades, the country, traditional costumes and architecture. It also includes sections of Galician archaeology, painting and sculpture. Different temporary exhibitions are regularly organized on a variety of subjects.

Fundacion Eugenio Granell

The Eugenio Granell Foundation was created in 1995 by virtue of an agreement between the surrealist artist , Eugenio Granell, and Santiago City Council. The main objective of this museum is to promote Granell's work and the principles of surrealism and its affinities.

Museo das Peregrinacions (The Pilgrimage Museum)

The exhibition is divided into the following eight rooms, which emphasize the magnitude of the pilgrimage and worship of St. James for European culture and Hispanic America :

Room I .- The pilgrimage: a ritual pilgrimage route.
Room II .- Origins of Jacobean Worship : The transfer of St. James' body.
Room III .- Santiago, cathedral and city: The role of the Apostle's tomb in promoting the city of Compostela .
Room IV .- Santiago's Pilgrims: Routes and Rites.
Room V .- Iconography of St. James: The image of St. James throughout history.
Room VI .- Guilds and craft traditions in Compostela . Room VII .- Compostela engravings.
Room VIII .- The harmony of the Universe: The musicality of the Porch.

Museo da Colexiata de Sar

Situated in the Romanesque Church of Santa María de Sar , this small museum founded in 1975, houses pieces of very important historical and documental value. One example is the church's foundational parchment, dated 1136 and bearing the seal of Archbishop Diego Gelmírez . The section dedicated to gold and silver artifacts includes liturgical objects made in Compostela's workshops during the 18th century.

Casa-Museo da Troia

This museum recreates the student atmosphere of the famous boarding house run by " Doña Generosa " in Santiago de Compostela at the end of the 19th century and immortalized by the writer Alejandro Pérez Lugín in his novel " La Casa de la Troya. "

Museo do Colexio Medico

Located in Compostela's urban development vicinity, this small monographic museum displays the old devices used in the medical department of anaesthesiology. Most of its exhibits have been donated throughout the years by prominent doctors from Compostela and Galicia .
